There are few home improvement projects that you can take on that offer the return on investment, or illicit such a feeling of satisfaction when done right, than a kitchen remodel. Unfortunately, not everything goes according to plan and few projects can be as disruptive as a kitchen remodel to your everyday living.

The kitchen is often more than a place to prepare food. It can be the most used room in the house. Everybody has a reason to be in the kitchen, in can be meeting room, often a pathway to the outdoors, or just a place to relax. Features like a serving bar, a fire place, or a breakfast nook give you so many options, and it really can be as versatile as your imagination. A well designed kitchen should be functional as well as comfortable, providing the space to cook dinner, clean dishes, and include lots of usable counter space for food preparation.

Depending on your kitchen requirements you might value a lot of storage space, or prefer a large open areas, space permitting. Consider all the things you’ll have to decide. When choosing to install kitchen cabinets, the styles can number into the hundreds. Are you going to install granite countertops, or other natural stone surfaces? Are you going to entertain in the kitchen, or is it strictly for food preparation? What about the flooring? Are you going to install wood flooring, tile or some other flooring choice? And then you have to put it all together with the right color choices for the cabinets, paint and flooring so they all fit nicely together.

Once this is agreed upon, you’ll then need all these pieces put together into a three dimensional (3D) digital representation of your kitchen. The kitchen designer can quickly put together a basic layout based on your dimensions and then start placing components, cabinets, appliances, and work areas into the design, while providing you with up to the minute cost information.

You can do some of this basic layout and design using some readily available design tools. All you’ll need to get started is a pencil, a tape measure, and some graph paper. Measure the basic layout of the kitchen and draw this on the graph paper. Each small box on the paper can represent a dimension (ft) and you can start roughing out the kitchen design using standard size cabinets. So the time spent in the beginning, doing the planning and preparation will be time well spent on the back end and your finished design will likely be that much closer to the dream kitchen you had imagined.
